Professor Soohyun Yang has served as an assistant professor at Seoul National University since 2023. She studied Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering at Korea University, received her M.S. there, and earned her Ph.D. from Purdue University's Lyles School of Civil Engineering in 2019. She then conducted postdoctoral research at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research-UFZ in Germany. Two of her papers in Water Resources Research received WRR Editors' Choice Awards, and in 2024 she became the first Korean recipient of the AOGS Hydrological Sciences Kamide Lecture Award.
Her research seeks to maintain water in sufficient quantity and appropriate quality while balancing human society and natural ecosystems. She studies the formation and evolution of natural river networks and urban drainage networks and the interactions among rainfall, runoff, nutrients, contaminants, and aquatic ecosystems. Combining field observations, water-related big data, process-based models, network theory, and machine learning, she addresses flood prediction, ecological risks from wastewater discharge, infrastructure resilience, and sustainable watershed management.
