Professor Sung-Ryul Kim received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering and his Ph.D. in Civil, Urban and Geosystem Engineering with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering from Seoul National University. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at SNU's Engineering Research Institute and the University of Colorado Boulder before joining Dong-A University in 2005. After serving as a visiting professor at Florida State University, he joined Seoul National University in 2017 and is currently a professor.

His research covers foundation engineering, seismic design of geotechnical structures, soil-structure interaction, offshore geotechnics, and soft-ground engineering. Through numerical analysis, pile load tests, shaking-table tests, and centrifuge modeling, he studies the static and dynamic behavior of foundation systems. Current interests include seismic design of underground structures, offshore-wind foundations such as large-diameter monopiles and tripod suction buckets, mooring anchors, liquefaction-induced settlement, and safe and rational foundation design for onshore and offshore infrastructure.
